Flight Booking: I booked a flight through HDFC regalia portal to easymytrip. Since I have booked before 45 days I got the average price of the return ticket with HDFC Regalia credit card reward points. We got the layover on reunion since the country is in southern tip of South Africa-> Madagascar -> Reunion.
Chennai – reunion(3hrs lay over) – Mauritius
Mauritius – reunion(14 hours layover) – Chennai

Homestay Booking: Since the cost of food is high in Mauritius, we planned for home cooking so I booked a homestay 1BHK apartment with a kitchen and 600m nearby beautiful Perebere beach.

All in one form(free): Visa free for Indians, but we need to fill the All in one form and after reaching the Mauritius we need to submit at the immigration checkpoint in airport.

Air Suvidha(free): While returning to India we need to fill form and submit in Mauritius check-in counter. Please check Ministry of Tourism for more understanding.

Money Exchange: As usual, I went to my favorite place to exchange. I planned to buy 25,000 MUR(Mauritian rupee) but they denied my request since it is less frequent currency; they suggest buying US Dollars and In Mauritius we can convert it. So I bought 450 USD which cost me 45,000 RS(approx.)

Travel Insurance: I bought family travel insurance in Navi bupa for 1M USD for each and it cost around 3k since my mom and dad crossed 55.

Priority pass: I thought to impress my mom and dad with the luxury airport lounge. So I applied two addon cards on HDFC regalia for my mom and dad’s name to access domestic lounge and for international lounge access I applied three priority passes. If you have a HDFC regalia card, you will get these for free.

CS Friend: Since I am an active user in couch surfing, I got a Mauritian friend @Jonathan through CS. He is an amazing person who lives in Perebere helped me to hire Taxi diver (@vishal) with very reasonable price and provided me sound information about the locations.

Backpacking: Air austral flight we have the privileges to carry 22Kg per person for free. I used my 45L wildcraft rucksack bag to hold things like mini cooker,masalas and rice for cooking and 7 days of clothes.

I love the change our names since we had some funny conversation through our journey.

Day 1 (5^th Nov 2022)
Chennai airport – Airport lounge – Chennai to Reunion Airport – Reunion to Mauritius Airport – Money Exchange – Taxi to Pereybere homestay

Chennai airport

On 4^th Nov 2022 10 PM, we booked a taxi to the airport(500rs). We stayed inside the airport for 5 hours. Requel was a Pro-active woman she brought her flask with black tea. We enjoyed the hot tea in that cold surroundings. For 7 AM flight, check-in counter opens at 4:30 AM and we handover’d our luggage only kept my bugbag and @Requel’s handbag. We cleared the immigration counter when they put the stamp on our Passport ( wow that moment!)

Airport lounge

Since we had three HDFC regalia cards, they approved us to enter inside the Airport lounge. We had a good early morning meal (Pongal,idly, juice and coffee).

Chennai to Reunion Airport

1^st time flight experience for @Requel and @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono . During the check-in I requested them for the front seat. Fortunately ,We got more space in front to stretch our legs. I had a little doubt whether flight travel was manageable for them, but they enjoyed like a little child. It is 6 hrs journey. They provided us Indian meal for free and Juice, coffee and tea before we landing to reunion.

Once we finished our meal. @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono folded food wrappers like a ball.
@Don_Pablo_El_Fiono: hemmah! Konjam windova open panu intha papera thuki veliya potuduren( Requel! Please open the window. I will throw these wrappers outside?)
@Requel: (?_?) Shocked!
@DarkEnergy: What the heck! We are not travelling on the bus!
@Requel: Open panna flight la iruka yelarum jalasamathithan pathukonga ( If we open the window it will become an ocean burial for all of us!)
@DarkEnergy: Mind voice( This is the Power of Don Pablo El Fiono! Ha ha! Everything same for him. Maybe he is a sage who knows!)

Reunion to Mauritius Airport

3hrs layover on Reunion Island. It was a French remote island. During our layover, we have met a person from Coimbatore Let’s call him @CIVILPrabhu (Who is working in Mauritius for 5 years in L&T metro project as a civil engineer) He was every intelligent person provided much information about the Mauritius. Told us to must visit Casela nature park and also told about Emirates flights and their amazing services.

@DarkEnergy: Do you know? Food was amazing in Air austral flight.
@CIVILPrabhu: I think you never experienced the hospitalities and food in Emirates. I am a frequent traveler. We have a flight from Chennai – Dubai – Mauritius.  Air austral flights were tiny but Emirates was Airbus it hold enormous capacity. If you got a chance next time, travel on Emirates flight.
@CIVILPrabhu: Please keep in mind. All stores will close around 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday was a holiday. So if you want to buy a sim or exchange money please do it at Mauritius airport itself.

We boarded the air austral flight to Mauritius. It was just 30mins journey. They gave us apple juice to relax and landed on Mauritius soil. Such a amazing view it was like a swimming pool beach.

Immigration & Money Exchange

Immigration was so smooth since we have provide our All in one form at immigration counter and got the seal to stay for 15 days in Mauritius.

As per the advice from CIVIL Prabhu I have exchanged 150 USD for 4500 MUR at airport exchange counter. We saw two females with north Indian facial feature in the exchange counter and they told they were born here but their grands were from India. I am surprised to see Indian languages (Tamil and Hindi) in Mauritius Currency.

When I asked about the Sim, Mytelecom sim cost 600 MUR for one month unlimited internet. That won’t be helpful to me. Since I am using Jio post paid, I enabled my internal roaming for emergency call to taxi driver.

Taxi to Pereybere homestay

Once we came out, I am very much happy to see our taxi driver, @Vishal who recommend by CS Johnathan. Who holding my name plate at the airport entrance. I got a wonderful vibe. It triggered my nostalgic old movie scenes with everyone waiting for the hero entrance with the name( I rarely felt I am a hero of the story, but it was fun to feel that hype). I hugged @Vishall and started to homestay. It was 6 PM with drizzling weather. It took 1.5 hrs to reach our homestay. While driving, @Vishal told us about city,area and shopping malls, landscape. Even though the island was small, we cannot take a direct route in the middle. We have enormous mountains, so we need to take different route to different zones. He also told school and medical was free but tax is very high for the citizens. Eventually we reached our homestay @Armance( @Marcellus relative) waited for us and told us about the apartment. They had coffee powder,suger,salt, juice bottle for us to consume. We saw a beautiful balcony to have a cup of tea!.

Day 2 (6^th Nov 2022)
SIDE QUEST 1(DarkEnergy) – Pereybere bus to Port louis – Port Louis to Tamarind waterfalls – Hired a Guide – return by bus.

Always when I am going to a new area, I will scout the place and understand about the culture. Next day I told Requel and Don Pablo to take rest or explore the nearby beach. I will be back around 4 PM.

@DarkEnery: Lets start Side quest 1!.

Pereybere bus to Port louis – Port Louis to Tamarind waterfalls

I took the nearby bus, Perebery beach at 6:30 AM. Since I spoke to the Facebook’s famous hiker in Mauritius Hiking with Ashwin to be my guide for tamarind waterfalls, he told me to reach the place at 9:30 AM and provided me the bus number and route.
While travelling on the bus I got the chance to speak with @Veyom(50Plus). He helped me to take another bus from Perebery to port lous (immigration square) – Victoria stopping – tamarind. I followed @Veyom to get into the bus to tamarind falls. he told he has three sons, the elder one same as my age and he is sports a person. At his young age, he came 5^th in athletics all over the Pacific ocean games. He went there to represent Mauritius’ country. Now he works as coach and Mauritius athlete board member.

Note: He told for senior citizen bus and metro free.

I gave him my one of the souvenirs which I have ( I bought this souvenir from my friend. she is a amazing artist debstheartist). During my travel I gave souvenirs to people I love it is a tocken of gratitude from me. That to souvenirs made soulfully by my friend I felt It was most precious gift.

@Veyom was very happy to received this gift.

Hired a Guide

At 9:05 PM, I reached the place. Since I don’t have a local sim or internet, I unable to call Shivam. person standing on the bus stand gave me a mobile to call @Ashwin. He told he started earlier since I didn’t pick the call; he gave me the idea for checking someone in bus stand for the guide. Govind(60Plus) accept to be by guide and knows many languages (English ,hindi,French,Mauritian Creole and little german.)

Let me call him @DrunkenMaster(Govind). Drunken master is very active and has vast knowledge of the landscape. I felt a little anxious, but I am managed to not let my fear out because of his attitude and I felt deep down my lover (waterfalls) and mother nature is there to protect me.

During our trekking @DrunkenMaster stopped at some point ,entered farming field picked some greens and told me to eat some leaf. When I looked closer wow it was spinachi (kothamali), pepper plant and Thailam plant etc. We trek down in the forest. They call that waterfalls 7 cascade from bottom to tip we can see 7 stages. 1^st we trekked bottom 5^th from there slowly we reached the top. Short trek, hardly took 45min but when we climb down, we need to grip branches and place the step carefully on the down hill.

Water flow was medium and looked amazing. I took pedicure treat on they tiny pond. This @DrunkenMaster taking a sip of alcohol in cocola bottle whenever he taking a rest to breathe while trekking even I felt I might became his guide if anything goes wrong since he was in Drunken Monkey Mode. But he has a amazing person he taught me how to climb and place the steps carefully while trekking. I enjoyed the waterfalls at 1^st cascade, water was flowing for the 30 feet height. My lover waterfalls in this form has a long hair as water flow stretching up to seven stages. I felt my negativity washed away by her affection. Base was 50 feet depth so i hesitated to swim. So sat in the corner and enjoy the view for sometimes.

For safe return, I paid 700 MUR to @DrunkenMaster and thanked him. He is nice and interesting guy.

After 2 hours of bus travel I reached at 4 PM to my homestay.

SIDE QUEST 2 (Don Pablo El Fino & Raquel) – Homestay – Navigation Map – Pereybere beach.

Another part of the story once @DarkEnergy left the stay for trekking. @Raquel cooked a meal for afternoon and dinner. In homestay, there was TV with Netflix subscription @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono and @Raquel watched the Doctor(tamil) movie and took a rest of afternoon since the sun’s heat was it bit high when compare to India. Also, the region had high humidity. At 3 PM, they started their exploration, they only know few vocabulary in English , don’t have sim and internet in the mobile. Even though 600m to beach from homestay it was not a direct route, we need to take left-right-left to reach the beach. @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono took the paper and pen @Raquel moved in front, dictated important symbols and slowly they draw a street map to reach beach and return.

When I came back and checked the drawn map. It amazed me with @Raquel intellect may be my mom’s lineage was explorers it seems.

Once I reached around 5:30 PM we all went to Pereybere beach, had some ice cream and watched the sunset.

I felt it was like a euphoria. I can see African ,French, both south and north Indian descendants came with their family having party and watching sunset with the harmony on the Sunday evening. Such a memorable experience.

Day 3 (7^th Nov 2022)
Taxi – Hidden Minissy Waterfalls – Cascavelle Shopping Mall – Casela Nature Parks

Thanks to @Johnathan who introduced me to @vishal taxi driver. He informed me we can start at 9:30 AM I asked why he told 7-9AM is office time we will stuck up in traffic for an hour. Later I noticed road are small and single route in most of the villages.  So that we should avoid 7-9 AM and 3-4:30 PM timing during week days.

I have shared the map with the driver even he doesn’t know that place because it is not come under usual travel route since I am a friend of @Johnathan he accepted to drop us on that location.

Hidden Minissy Waterfalls

We followed the google location and our car stopped in front of big sugar cane field at the entrance Big boulders stopped our car to proceed further. Our driver asked are you sure? I was yes I am. I am desperate to see my lover’s in another form.

@DriverVishal: You don’t even have a sim card how you going to contact me?

@DareEnergy: We will come within 2 PM so that you can reach this place.

Now we took our bags and were ready for the adventure to find my lover, Minissy.

Even though I don’t have local sim card I have downloaded the offline map and slowly going inside the sugar cane. It was little creepy since no one is there full of 4 -5 feet tall grass. I felt like we were stuck in time-loop movie called “in the tall grass”.

@Raquel and @Don_Pablo_El_fino were quite skeptical about my decision and slowly followed behind me. I reached the small peak from there my google navigation was stopped but I cannot find the way. I saw small path curving in the corner so I told them to follow the path,made my mind calm and closed my eyes to listen to my lover’s harmonious rhythm. Yes, yes! I can hear her singing. She is calling me!. I followed the water sound and found the way to reach the top of that waterfall. OMG that’s was huge. My darling Minissy wrapped sugarcane grass to make her hidden from outsider but I am @DarkEnergy I can find her since my love is very strong. It was such a beautiful view. Slowly we went down, path was slippery, but we managed and saw the beautiful crystal clear waterfalls.

There was a little swinging rope tied on the tree @Raquel and @DarkEnergy enjoyed swimming like a child. After 30mins group of three came to that place. Man from the group told that “Your car driver informed us to check whether you are fine wait I will call him and tell”. I feel, what a nice person.after one hour we informed that person to call our driver we will reach the car in 20mins. When we reaching the location, our driver standing on the top of the bolder and waved hands to attract us towards correct direction. We thanked our driver for the lovable caring.

Cascavelle Shopping Mall

Before we reached the place, I bought one local sim for communication 100 MUR one week unlimited internet. While buying the sim I spoke to female customer care agent. I asked where she came from she told she came from little island around Muri I was shocked and told Muri itself a tiny island, she laughed. I thought even tiny island people are living it was interesting information.

Casela Nature Parks

As per the @CivilPrabhu’s suggestion, we reached Casela park ticket 1000 MUR per person but I felt it was a worthy experience. I have doubt how we can see many animals here, zoo keeper told they transport animals from Madagascar. I haven’t seen a huge tortoise. We can touch and hug it,it was a living fossil. Big ones are too lazy but we should we very careful with its mouth it as strong beak. It was quite a friendly animal.

I saw big koi fish or gold fish,brids ethnic Mauritius; We enjoyed rollercoaster ride. @Requel and @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono enjoyed lot since we are the only person need to control the breaks. It was a fun way to see the whole zoo on the top.

We climbed up on the tour bus which went inside Zoo door opened like Jurassic park and we entered to see the giraffe so close that we can touch their face @Requel was a kind of tomboy without hesitation she went and touched the giraffe.

Zone name was African safari. They built a place like. that we felt were that we inside the African jungle we saw many types of dears , When we were sitting in the bus suddenly one ostrich came near to @Requel and asked for food. 1st time I am seeing it so close. Lions were in separate place but it was closed since we reached late.

Overall, we got an amazing experience. We reached home around 8 PM.

Day 4 (8^th Nov 2022)
Taxi – Le Morne – Observing Whales & Swimming with Dolphins – Bus to Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark – Port louis to Pereybere homestay

Le Morne

This time we informed @DiverVishal to come at 4:30 AM to pick us since we need to reach at 6:45 AM to le Morne and it will take 1.5 hours’ duration.

Observing Whales & Swimming with Dolphins

We took a speed boat along with two instructors and a couple from Mumbai,india,france,Uk and above 50 female couple. @Pascal who explained to us about how we are tracking the whales and @Stewag was the driver. We have a mini bathroom in the boat. It was like a ground floor.

Another boat from Dolswim went to track the whale with their sonar device. When we moving deeply in to the ocean after 15 mins they got a call from satellite phone they track down the humpback. @Pascal was so excited since it was very rare to spot a humpback whale at this season and told us we are lucky.

When we went closer and closer, we saw mom and baby humpback whale does its iconic squirt out and diving into the ocean. No words to explain my joy since after discovery channel, Now I saw it on Live. @Pascal instructed we should swim and stress the whale since if it got stressed whale will leave its child alone then the child will die since they were the mammalian family. We drifted along with whale and observed their humongous beauty. After that we came to dolphins location.

Dolphins we saw skipper it was very friendly. @Pascal asked people who know swimming can dive with me to see the dolphin close. I know little swimming but it was fine since I have a life jacket. I wore swimming gloves to my foot ,snorkeling goggle,wind pipe and….. just jumped like “kuthichiduda kaipula” into 40 feet depth. Since the sea was clear I saw the ground and swimming towards @Pascal but I am the last one it was very difficult to chase the dolphin and people who jumped with me were swam like mermaids. 1st attempt I missed and 2nd attempt I jumped again, this time I put my full energy to swim and finally saw the dolphin 5 feet away from me, 3 dolphins playing with each other in deep such a beautiful nature’s creation. 3rd attempt failed since my thighs lost it energy. I came to the boat with the happiness. At least I saw them and recorded in my Gopro.

Next stop we reached the coral reef. It is 10 feets deep. We jumped and saw the colorful fishes and multi color corals. It felt like a different world. @Requal was enjoying it and the fish were havn’t scared of us. @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono quite scared to jump. We were convinced and made him to hit the sea, but he scared and climbed into the boat after a minute.

Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark

We took a local bus and went to 7 colours earth location. It took us 1 hour to reach that place. From there we need to walk 5min reach the entrance. Ticket cost 300 MUR per person for all there but he told to reach 7 colours we need to walk 3km there was not a transit. So we asked lift to fellow tourist and thanks we to them couple gave us lift and dropped us in the mid location since they are going to somewhere else. From there 1 km we walked towards the place. I thought like wow now we were middle of nowhere in tiny island that feels like we have the power to make our dream come tour. It may take little time, but it will happen, eventually. From there we reached the 7 colour it is an unusual landscape with 7 colours of sand and we saw nearby tortoise camp. It was just a sight seeing it is trade mark of Muri but @Requal enjoyed a lot.

Once we return we need have walk again 3 km. It was quite hard we asked for lift but 15 minutes no one interested to gave us. We walked to for 1km French female couple stopped nearby and gave us a lift. We are very thankful and reached the bus stand.

@Requal noticed the same bus drive and conductor there . Bus driver stopped at some place and conductor was (22 years old) having cooking oil with him and gave it to the old age women nearby the street, driver asked if you are doing charity you can give them money why you are giving oil?. Conductor replied they are living in igloo so I felt cooking oil was more important than money. @Requal observed this conversation and told me this story. Love and kindness everywhere!

We reached home after taking 2-3 buses.

Day 5 (9^th Nov 2022)
Sockalingum Meenatchee Ammen Kovil – Natural History Museum – City flea Market

Sockalingum Meenatchee Ammen Kovil

@Requal another bucket list to visit temple so we took the bus and reached port louse. Temple was in the mind of city, It was huge and calm since it was not a season time Thaipoosam was very famous here. We explored temple, had our lunch and moved to another place. I am happy to see tamil words and Tamil tuition centers. There they teach Tevaram ,Thirukkural , avvaiyar aathichudi and silapathikaram.

Natural History Museum

Museum explains about ethnic animals ,bird and fish in this location. Then we have a separate room DODO bird. DODO bird was the last living specie from dinosaur times and extincted around 1700 AD because of human intervention. Europian ship came to the island. They let rats and pigs ran from the ship and went into the forest. Pig and rat ate dodo birds’ eggs and destroyed the nest. DODO was an easy meal for sailors since DODO don’t have any clue who they are so without fear it came near to people and easy catch for them. They did atrocities on living fossil tortoise by 2-3 people climbing on its back .

We went upstairs and found about the history of Muri slaves from Africa and India drop in Mauritius pushed them in farming the sugar cane for the global trade. It was under French colony . After the war colony withdrawn and slaves took control of the land and formed the current democratic governments, India helping Muri by building metro,college, medical treatments etcc.

City flea Market

We have gone to flea market and tasted many verities off food. It was superb and saw many Indians there and some souvenirs. I saw Tamilian Adi who having show here 🙂

Day 6 (10^th Nov 2022)
Pereybere beach – Taxi to Mauritius airport

Last day we went to beach and enjoyed. Beach was like a swimming pool when we go deeper and deeper, depth will increase, fewer waves and sand were so smooth.

Local food

I meet one Tamil descendant community who was having famous restaurant one. I bought octopus, and the dumpling spoke. Muri food having fresh taste less spicy.

Taxi to Mauritius airport

We said thanks to everyone , special thanks to @DriverVishal and gave him a souvenir. finally, reached Mauritius airport and our adventure trip completed.

Day 7 (11^th Nov 2022) – Mauritius Airport – Dubai – Chennai Airport

Why we went to Dubai?

When we are in Mauritius checking counter, we want to reach reunion at 10th Nov 2022 6 PM, next day morning 10 PM we have a flight from reunion to Chennai. But check-in Counter air austral service desk stopped us and asked for VISA!. I was like, what visa ? we came here by same flight they didn’t ask us visa. They told us 3 hrs waiting time was fine but for the return ticket it was 14hrs waiting time, so visa needed to stay at night in Reunion.I have called HDFC and make my trip. I am unable to contact any team.  @Requal running to other counters to ask for help even though she was not good at speaking English she explained the situation to help desk as much as possible. In my mind :- I felt guilty that I screwed up! But now I should not get emotional I have a responsibility to get @Requal and @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono safe to Chennai.

During the rush up @Don_Pablo_El_Fiono asked us what is the problem? if they were not allowing us by both flight and ship. We can take the bus route to reach reunion! – We were like, are you even real?

DarkEnergy’s “Critical Thinking” mode activated!, I have listed the possibilities below:

Attempt 1. Talking to HDFC & Makemytrip– Unable to reach

Attempt 2. I called @Johnatha, he told me to check any flight ticket Muri to reunion– All the flights were booked today and tomorrow to reunion, customer care suggested “tomo morning 8:30 PM before checking counter closes ask them whether we have any no show tickets but it will be very difficult to get 3 tickets but check your luck”. I don’t want to risk because I bought connected flight tickets so both reunion and Chennai ticket will be given in Muri airport itself. If I change the flight, It might cause more issues.

Attempt 3. Get visa in reunion- Since it was 4;30PM, the office was closed in reunion and that to we can only get visa for Indians by Reunion travel agency or hotel permit letter. I don’t of neither of it.

Attempt 4. Any flight to Chennai – After 4 days we have a flight from Muri to Mumbai but it will cost per head 42K. Even If I book the ticket 4-5 days in Muri may cost us an extra 2.5 L along with tickets.

Attempt 5. Any other way to reach reunion – Reunion was also a island only allowed route was flights even though it was 15mins of flight travel.

Attempt 6. I called @Civilprabhu and told the issue – As I told earlier he was a frequent emirates flight passenger and told “Emirates flight tickets is available for tomo 6 AM From MURI to Dubai to Chennai”. Thanks to universe! you are a life savior @Civilprabhu.

I used my Axis Credit card and saw PNR number was generated but unable to download the ticket. I have called Axis care but they told there was no such transaction happened but I received the msg transaction was successful. I was in full of stress my neck and shoulders were pained a lot. @Civilprabhu again suggested “If you have doubt about the booking, tonight we have 11 PM emirates flight to Dubai. Check-in counter will open at 8 PM you can get a confirmation about the ticket status”. When the check-in counter was opened they told “You haven’t paid the amount, within 30mins you have to pay or else it will get auto cancelled”. Then only I realized since the ticket cost of three members was 1.1L, Axis bank blocked the international transaction for the security reason.

Unfortunately, I haven’t bring the laptop with me. Everything I have done in mobile that made more tedious to solve the problem. With the PNR I went to the Emirates website. Thanks to universe again! recently I have bought Amex MRCC credit card with their sleek mobile app. Finally, I booked the flight tickets and got the confirmation from Emirates check-in counter.

6th Attempt was successful! DarkEnergy’s “Critical Thinking” mode deactivated!

Since I am have Priority pass I used it in Mauritius Lounge.

Emirates flight was like an Air bus and can occupy 300+ passengers. Top-notch hospitality and flight was too big, which I saw only in flight Hi-jack movies. Any how we also saw Dubai and finally reached the Chennai.
